Teal/Purple/Pink/White Woodin African Print

Teal/Purple/Pink/White Woodin African Print

Support Ghana’s resilient textile industry with quality Woodin African prints, designed and printed in Ghana. Today, conscious consumerism is a must (even when buying prints in Africa). Far too many “African” prints (also known as “ntoma,” “Ankara,” and/or “waxprints”) are actually cheap-quality imitations, and their prevalence has significantly affected jobs on the continent.

In the 70’s, Accra, Ghana’s capital, was the hub for premium, African-made waxprints. Interestingly, according to Stephen Badu, Director of Ghanaian fabric brand GTP, the Nigerian term “Ankara” came from Nigerian tradesmen who were in fact referring to Accra and its abundance of quality cloth at that time.

Due to the influx of cheaply-made imitation prints, Accra, once home to 13 textile factories which employed over 20,000 people, now has 3 remaining factories. The industry employs less than 5,000 people.

Woodin continues to be a highly-respected brand in Ghana. Their prints have a premium cotton feel and bold, colorful designs printed on one side. Thirty-five to forty percent of the cotton used is 100% sourced, transported, and spun in Ghana. Explore your creativity with these limited edition designs.
